Despite all the activity and busyness of your day you have to stay in touch. Don’t isolate yourself from connecting with others in your field. I have been in Waco, Texas for 23 months and just now starting to get connected to the community. The first 22 months have been fast pace and one thing after another. You know how it is! You get so engrossed in administration and life that you have a tendency to leave out down time.
Friday is my day off but i made a point to set up a lunch with a fellow administrator from a church down the road from me. I had not talked to him in a while so i thought it would be fun to just casually meet and visit over lunch. We visited about the usual stuff administrators talk about like facilities, our crazy schedules, social media and how to avoid it at our age, and how the last conference we attended went. It was a great time and very relaxing.
My point with this blog is that we all need to slow down now and then and build on friendships. I know we get super busy and think we don’t have the time but we have to make the time. Time to just visit with friends. John Maxwell in his article on Relationship Refueling, he says we should place people all around us that encourage us, mentor us, and laugh with us. I agree with that and have tried over the years to find those types of friends.
In Waco, Texas Jason’s Deli is the hot spot for lunches. Almost every time i eat there i run into someone i know, most the times several! My friend and i ate at Jason’s today and we had a great visit and i ran into three church members and and girl that used to work at the church as well as other friends. I would say you need to get out at least once a week to a hot spot like that and network. Call a friend up for lunch and just go visit for awhile.
Don’t get stuck in the office all week and not get out. Push the work aside for awhile and lighten up over lunch with a colleague or friend. Take the time and make the call! Buy someone a lunch and the favor will be returned i am sure of it! Enjoy…
