There is always one driver when the light turns green, off they go as fast as they can. You watch as they weave back and forth between lanes cutting people off and never using a turn signal. Soon they disappear from your sight as they race off driving crazy. When you pull up to the next red light, there they are, sitting and waiting for it to turn green again so they can race off. Crazy isn’t it?
Crazy but we sometimes do the same thing once we are at the office. We open the door, sit down, and start working like it is a race or something. So many projects to do; so many deadlines; and so many things on our to do list. That is not the way to start a day.
Do you want to make your day run smoother and less stressful? Most Church Administrators and Business Managers are responsible for so many areas of the church it’s hard to get a handle on it all sometimes. Here is what I suggest you try.
- As you arrive at the office drive around the church campus first. It does not matter how big your church is just drive around it looking for things out of place or things needing attention. Make a mental note and then write it down when you get in the office to send to the appropriate person.
- Before your crank up the computer, walk around the entire office and greet each staff member there. I do this for our support staff, say hello, and ask how things are going. Keep up with personal things going on with them and ask about those as well.
- Now check your email and voice messages making note of things that need your attention today.
- On Mondays, I print out a financial budget report and do a quick scan of how things are looking so far.
- Look at the church calendar to see what is happening that day.
- Now get a cup of coffee and start knocking down your task list.
Those are 6 easy things to do BEFORE you start the race for the day getting things done. Most the time I can accomplish those 6 pre-starts in about 30 minutes and it is well worth it and make my day start out great.
How do you start your day? Do you have others to add? Comment on my process? Have a great day!
