Building a Team Can Be a Lot of BSS!

ateamRemember the A-Team show? I loved watching that show because it was funny and each one of them had their own little quirkiness. It seemed at times they did not get a long but by the end of each show they had successfully worked together to get the job done.

Team building is difficult and a great challenge but I believe the rewards can be great once you get it built. I really like the word “team” better than committee or group. Team says you are all working together to accomplish a task or goal. I use the acronym BSS for Building Service Staff at our church.

My latest team effort is building a team that is proactive in setting up for church events and programs. Once the event is booked, there are 5 areas of leadership that need to be in action together. For me to do that I had to bring together the 5 leaders in one room and get them to interact and work as one. My challenge was these 5 people did not get along and did not work together at all. Kind of like the A-Team at times. Here are the 5 areas you should bring together to carry out your events.

Promotion - someone needs to be in charge of getting the word out and making sure promo’s are run

Housekeeping- the room has to be set and ready and clean

Maintenance - the room temperature has to be maintained and all the lights working and the room in good repair

Food Service - events with food requests need to be planned in advance for food purchase and prep

IT/Media – events needing sound and lighting will need someone lined up to run it all

You can see that these 5 areas are key to a successful event or program. Now you see the importance of getting this team working as one and with the common goal of making each event excellent. Here is what I have done to try and build the team.

We meet every two weeks all together around the table looking at the church schedule two weeks out. In other words we meet on the 1st of the month to look at events starting on the 15th. That gives us two weeks to correct any problems, be prepared, look for setup and cleaning conflicts, and be ready with excellence! Our team meetings are not a gripe session or complaint department; we work together to accomplish each task. By meeting together regularly it forces each team member to interact in a positive way even though they may not like each other.

Try this plan out and let me know what you think! Are you building a team? How is it going? Leave a comment!
