12 THINGS I LEARNED DURING AN AUDIT

auditFinding yourself in the middle of an audit on April Fools Day could be fun but I was afraid to try anything with the auditors. I kept reminding myself they are the ones writing up the management letter after it’s all said and done. I really wanted to tell them that our software had a glitch a few months ago and we lost 30 days worth of data.  Here are the 12 things I  learned this week while hosting a financial audit at church. Learn them and live by them and you will be fine!

1. Do things the right way all the time.

2. You’ll never do it right all the time

3. Be proactive and prepared in advance

4.You will never be ready for an audit

5. Know everything there is about church accounting

6. You will never know it all and will learn something new every time

7. Document everything you do along the way

8. They will still ask you for something you did not document

9. Make sure it all balances before the auditors arrive

10.You will never balance it all don’t even try

11. Take the auditors out to lunch every day they are there

12. Taking auditors to lunch will not buy you mercy

End of story~
