Have you ever watched those TV shows that go behind the scenes and film employees without them knowing it? I saw one where the employee was a cook and they filmed him adding gross ingredients to the food and even dropping food on the floor and replacing it right on the plate they are about to serve.
We have a similar scenario today within the social media realm that many may not be aware of; employers friends with employees on Facebook and Twitter. Sure they accepted their boss as a friend but down the road they soon forget who all friends are. I mean most people I see have hundreds of friends and don’t recall every single one of them.
It comes down to the employer sort of unintentionally lurking in the background watching and reading all the posts of the employee. It can get pretty tricky at times. An employee calls in sick for the day and the boss sees them on Facebook during the day. Or even worse sees a post by the sick employee posted from their cell phone. Maybe the boss should require the employee to post a picture of them in bed sick on their Facebook page just for verification!
There is also the issue of social media etiquette. What should you post and what should you not! Do you just say anything you want knowing that all your friends will see that post? I had a recent experience with one of my employees. The person posted a comment that they had a problem with another worker in the office and how they had bad thoughts every day about that person. So now her boss and all the other employees in the office saw this post and began wondering, is it me!
I confronted the employee the next day about the problem between the two workers and the meeting went fine. The very next day though she deleted me as a friend on Facebook.
Here is the question. Should you be able to post just anything on Facebook knowing your boss may be watching? Should employers be friends with employees?
What’s your take on the issue?
