What’s in a Name?

At one church I served at we came up with nick names in the office for the support staff. We did it just for fun and it really was fun. Our bookkeepers name was Becky so she became BECKY BOOKKEEPER in the office. The receptionist was Lizette but she and her husband once bought a Winnebago to travel in but it was a small one. They were so excited and that is all she talked about in the office so she became MINI WINNI. Then there was ROGER DODGER and DAN THE MAN. Ok! This was just for fun and we had a good time with it.
Now in my current church we are getting to the point to have to make some name changes. Currently in the support staff we have two Sara’s and one Sarah. So at an all staff lunch we decided to call them by their last name. Hey Johnson; hey Boucher; hey Miller we could say! Sounds a little rough though to call young women by their last name! LOL.
We also have on our staff now, Jeff, Julie, Josh, and now Jason. The four J’s we call them.

I think for fun one week we should say that everyone has to call each other by their last name. That would get some funny looks from the church members! But it is all about having  a good time in the office.

Would you want to be called by your last name or a nick name? Comments!

5 Levels of Doing

We all do something! In fact, we are ALWAYS doing something. There is never a time in your life when you are NOT doing something. No matter what it is, you are doing it! The word “do” or “doing” is a verb or action word. As long as you are breathing you are doing something. Sounds weird right?

Did you know there are 5 levels of doing something! Each level is independent of the others and describes the level at which you are doing something, but the goal is to move to level 5. Each level does get more intense and gets things done more.

Level # 1 – Need to do
There are things you need to do but probably will either not do or put it off as long as you can. There is certainly no excitement about doing it and usually these are the miniscule things that don’t motivate you at all. I need to go to the market and buy groceries. I need to mow the lawn pretty soon. I need to get a haircut. The mundane things we know we need to do, but can’t get real excited about doing them.

Level # 2- Want to do
You show a little more movement with these things because you like to do them; but they are no big deal. You will most likely do these things but still may procrastinate some in getting them done. You don’t mind doing them and will set some time aside for them. I want to go on a vacation. I want to pay my house mortgage off. I want to make more money.

Level # 3- Desire to do
Now you show more enthusiasm in doing these things. You know you need to do them and want to and actually have a desire to do them since you like them. With this level you start to accomplish more and get things done more. I have a desire to be more organized. I have a desire to go back to school. I have a desire to make my marriage work.

Level # 4- Love to do
When you love to do something you will do it more often and look for ways to do it. Not only do you have a desire but you love doing it. This is where it can get exciting but that excitement will be limited. You are not going to go overboard but will look forward to doing these things and enjoy every moment. I love to play basketball. I love my job. I love going on vacations. Many people stop here and hang out at level 4. The next level is hard to get to and to stay at. Loving to do things seems to be the ultimate action.

Level # 5 – Passionate to do
WOW! Here you are excited, enthused, motivated, and really doing something. This level is certainly different than the other levels.  Having a passion to do something causes you to actually do more and do it more often. This level is being ruled or compelled by intense emotion or strong feelings. When you are passionate you express and show yourself with intense, strong, feelings and emotional language. I am passionate about helping others. I am passionate about getting out of debt. I am passionate about what I do for a living. You can be passionate about anything you do.

Let’s quickly apply these levels. Notice if you are doing levels 1 thru 3 you are doing but not accomplishing very much. When you hit level 4 you start to get it. You are doing more and on a regular basis. To get to level 5 you have to push yourself hard to get there and work extra hard to stay there. That is the challenge.

I love to do_______________ (write what you do for a living). Now think what it would look like if you were passionate about _____________________(what you do for a living). What a difference that will make in your life and what you will be able to accomplish. Knowing the levels will help you get to level 5 and not be satisfied with any other level. Everyone should be passionate about something. It reveals who you are and what you are all about.

What is your passion? What level are you in with the things that matter to you? Your comments?

MINUTE TO WIN IT OFFICE EDITION

Here is an idea for team building that will guarantee a fun time for your office staff. Our staff all meet once a month for lunch and fellowship so this was the perfect time for some fun and games. I assembled 6 games from the popular show Minute to Win It and had them all set up before the lunch started. You can Google for the games and see how to set them up. I chose the Office Edition that used all office supplies for the games.

No matter how many you have playing just split the group into two teams for competition. Each game needs to be set for two players, one from each team competing against one another. Start with game one and ask for a member from each team to start. As you go to the next games just ask for players from each team that have not played yet. As each games is played record the winner. I did two rounds so that everyone played.

Fun Tips
I used a small air horn for the “times up” sound. I used someones phone for the minute counter. I had prizes for the winning team and loosing team. The winning team all got 100,000 candy bars.

The Best Part
At the end of the fun and games I asked for 4 volunteers to participate in the last game. I had four colored head bands with inexpensive step counters that clip on. Have the four stand in a line and place the head bands and counters on their forehead. Reset the counters to zero. Now, each time the person shakes their head it records a step. The person with the most steps in a minute wins. This game is called Bobble Heads and is hilarious.Try the link below for our video of Bobble Heads!

CABC Bobble Heads

Ok you need to do this for your office staff. It was so fun my wife had me to the same games at her office with lunch. It is a huge hit and gets people to interact and have fun. Team Building is essential to a great staff and has to be done over and over until they get it. Like i said our staff meets once a month for lunch, to celebrate birthdays, and fellowship. We invite all staff from the Senior Pastor to the Janitors.

Your comments and discussion welcomed here! What team building do you do?

Video Announcements

Many churches are now creating video announcements and showing those right before each service. Not more than 5-7 minutes long, they keep from getting bogged down with last minute requests from church members wanting something announced making the list too long. I like this method and from what I have seen they are jazzy and upbeat and really easy to listen to. The start up is a little difficult having to pre-record each week and making the time to set up and record. Does your church use this method? As a church member do you like video announcements? Let me know what you think.
